Programming and EeePC

My friends have been working on a game called Fuego. It uses SDL and OpenGL at the moment. I have thought it would be fun to help them program, however, I know little about C/C++ and I have very limited experience with programming on this level. I mostly have programmed in IT-BASIC for my TI-89. Lucky for me, my friend owns a copy of Beginning C++ Game Programming by Micheal Dawson. It starts with the basics, and it is (so far) simple enough for me to understand.

On a different note, I have tried the EeePC. I have to say that the EeePC is a fun little laptop. Asus has really created a functional laptop that can do most common tasks quite well. The laptop is great for quick web surfing, and testing networks. But what is great about it is that it runs linux, and with a little work I can get Ubuntu (with compiz) running on the system. The solid state drive inside is only 4GB which is a little small, but there is a 8GB version. even more interesting is that some people are hacking the hardware, adding bluetooth, 802.11n, and touchscreens among other things.

Smultron text editor

As I have been working on my programming projects, I have found a need for text editors that color the syntax. This not only makes it easy to identify what I am looking at, but colored text helps me to keep my source code in a clean, formatted, and easy to read form.

Using OS X, there are several different options. BBedit is one well known program, or the free version textwrangler. While both programs are nice, I just need some thing simple and easy to use. After trying a few different apps, I came across Smultron, by Peter Borg.

It has a simple interface, yet has language localizations, support for many different scripting and programming languages, unicode support and many other features. Best of all, unlike other text editors for programming, Smultron has a small memory footprint.
